Relationships and Health Education
At Monkspath School, our Relationships and Health Education (RHE) curriculum supports pupils in developing the knowledge, skills, and values they need to lead safe, healthy, and fulfilling lives. We follow the statutory guidance for Relationships Education and Health Education.
What We Teach
Our RHE curriculum is structured around two key areas:
-
Relationships Education: Pupils learn about families, friendships, respectful relationships, online safety, and being safe. This includes understanding boundaries, recognising healthy and unhealthy relationships, and knowing how to seek help and support.
-
Health Education: Pupils explore physical health, mental wellbeing, healthy eating, personal hygiene, the importance of sleep, and basic first aid. We also teach children about the changing adolescent body in an age-appropriate way.
Our curriculum is inclusive and reflects the diverse backgrounds and experiences of our pupils. It promotes kindness, respect, resilience, and self-worth.
Relationships and Health Education comprises of several aspects, which are:
- Personal, Social and Health Education (you may also see this called PSHE).
- Online relationships, internet safety and harms
- Physical health and fitness
- Heathy eating
- Health prevention
- Basic first aid
How We Teach
RHE is taught through:
- Weekly lessons from Year 1 to Year 6, using age-appropriate resources and approaches.
- A spiral curriculum that revisits key themes and builds depth over time.
- Cross-curricular links.
We use discussion, role-play, stories, and real-life scenarios to help children explore sensitive topics in a safe and supportive environment. Our approach is underpinned by our whole-school values.
What Children Learn and How We Assess
Children develop the confidence to make informed choices and build positive relationships. They learn to:
- Understand and manage emotions.
- Recognise and respond to risks.
- Communicate effectively and respectfully.
Assessment includes:
- Observation and participation in lessons.
- Pupil voice and reflection activities.
- Monitoring of progression across year groups.
This ensures pupils are developing secure knowledge and skills that support their wellbeing and personal development.
