Pupil Leadership at Monkspath: School Councillors,
Eco Councillors & Sports Leaders
At Monkspath School, we believe in giving our pupils a voice and empowering them to make a difference in school life. Each academic year, children from every class have the opportunity to stand for one of three important leadership roles: School Councillor, Sports Councillor, or Eco Councillor.
How Our Councillors Are Chosen
At the start of the school year, children who are interested in becoming a councillor prepare and deliver a short speech to their class, explaining why they would be a great choice for the role. After hearing the speeches, each class selects three finalists. These finalists are then voted for in a formal election using ballot boxes in the school hall—an exciting event that links directly to our teaching about democracy and British values.
Each class elects two councillors per role: a lead councillor and a deputy. These pupils represent their class for the whole academic year.
School Councillors
Our School Councillors are the voice of their classmates. They meet regularly to:
- Share ideas and suggestions from their peers.
- Discuss ways to improve school life.
- Help plan events and initiatives.
- Promote kindness, respect, and inclusion across the school.
They play a vital role in shaping our school community and ensuring every child feels heard.
Eco Councillors
Our Eco Councillors are passionate about sustainability and protecting the environment. They work together to:
- Raise awareness of eco issues across the school.
- Promote recycling, energy saving, and sustainable practices.
- Lead initiatives such as Walk to School Weeks, switch-off campaigns, and eco-friendly projects.
- Encourage everyone to take care of our planet.
They help us all to think greener and act more responsibly.
Sports Leaders (Years 3–6)
Sports Councillors are elected from Years 3 to 6 and help promote active, healthy lifestyles. Their responsibilities include:
- Attending meetings to set and review sports challenges.
-
Encouraging and supporting children to take part in active challenges
-
Monitoring physical activity during lunchtimes and playtimes
-
Providing pupil voice about PE and sport at Monkspath
-
Supporting and leading Sports Day
-
Promoting physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle
-
Taking photos of events
- Supporting pupil interviews and questionnaires to encourage wider participation in sport.
They are key to making sport fun, inclusive, and engaging for everyone.
These pupil leadership roles are a fantastic way for children to develop confidence, responsibility, and teamwork. We are proud of all our councillors and the positive impact they make every day.
