Monkspath Junior and Infant School

Science

At Monkspath School, our science curriculum is designed to spark curiosity, deepen understanding, and develop the skills children need to explore and explain the world around them. We follow the National Curriculum for Science at Key Stages 1 and 2, ensuring full coverage of statutory content and progression in both scientific knowledge and enquiry.

What We Teach

Our curriculum provides a broad and balanced science education across biology, chemistry, and physics. Children learn to:

  • Understand key scientific concepts and processes.
  • Use scientific vocabulary confidently.
  • Explore the natural and physical world through observation, questioning, and investigation.

We ensure that pupils build secure knowledge over time, revisiting and deepening their understanding as they progress through the school.

How We Teach

Science is taught weekly through engaging, practical lessons that:

  • Embed ‘working scientifically’ skills such as predicting, testing, measuring, and evaluating.
  • Make meaningful links with other subjects including maths, literacy, computing, and outdoor learning.
  • Use a sequenced curriculum that builds on prior learning and encourages curiosity.

We enrich learning through hands-on investigations, outdoor experiences, and opportunities to explore real-world science.

What Children Learn and How We Assess

Children develop a strong foundation in scientific thinking and enquiry. We assess learning through:

  • Ongoing formative assessment during lessons.
  • End-of-unit reviews and knowledge checks, for example through PoP tasks.
  • Pupil voice and science books that show progression and depth.

This helps us ensure that all pupils are making progress and are well-prepared for the next stage of their education.
